Best prop firms for beginners: 7 firms rated for a first challenge

A first prop firm challenge is a test of rule-following as much as trading skill. Most beginners need three things: a low entry price, rules they can track without a spreadsheet, and no deadline pushing them to overtrade. This guide rates the seven firms we review against those needs. Firm facts come from official sites and help centers, checked on 3 November 2026. Some come from our rules database, verified against those sites the same day.

Our main best prop firms guide picks firms by use case. This page goes deeper on one question: which firm makes a first attempt cheap, clear and forgiving?

What makes a prop firm beginner-friendly

We judged each firm on four points:

  • Low entry price. Your first challenge is tuition. A small, one-time fee limits the cost of failing.
  • Simple rules. A static maximum loss is easier to track than a trailing one. Fewer extra rules mean fewer surprise breaches.
  • No time limit. A deadline pushes new traders to size up. No deadline lets you trade small and wait for good setups.
  • Education and practice. Free trials, academies and simulated leagues let you learn the platform before you pay.

No firm wins on all four. Each one below has real downsides, and we list them. To see all seven side by side, use our prop firm comparison.

Forex and CFD firms for beginners

FTMO: the best learning tools

FTMO gives beginners the most ways to practise before paying. Its 2-Step Challenge page links to a 14-day Free Trial with simulated capital and to its free Academy.

The 2-Step rules are straightforward:

  • Profit targets of 10% and then 5%.
  • A 10% maximum loss and a 5% maximum daily loss.
  • At least 4 trading days, with an unlimited trading period.
  • A 100% refundable fee once you succeed.

Our database lists the 10K 2-Step at €89. See the FTMO 2-Step 10K rules for the full breakdown.

Downsides: prices are in EUR, so non-euro traders pay a conversion cost. The default 2-Step split is 80%, per FTMO's withdrawal FAQ. The cheaper 1-Step (€79 at 10K) has a 3% daily limit, a best-day rule and a non-refundable fee. That makes it harder for a first attempt.

FundedNext Stellar Lite: the lowest entry price

FundedNext's Stellar Lite help article lists the 5K account at $32.99. That is the lowest one-time price among the firms we track.

  • Profit targets of 8% in Phase 1 and 4% in Phase 2.
  • A 4% daily loss limit, based on the initial balance.
  • An 8% maximum loss: equity must not drop below 92% of the initial balance.
  • 2 trading days per phase on the standard 10-day reward cycle.
  • No time limit.

A loss floor fixed to the initial balance is easy to track. You always know your exact line. See the Stellar Lite 5K rules.

Downsides: the fee is refunded only with your third Performance Reward, so treat most of it as a real cost. Faster reward cycles need 5 trading days per phase. Our database also notes a base split of 80%, with 95% only via an add-on.

The5ers: low-cost steps and no deadline

The5ers keeps first steps cheap. Its Bootcamp page prices the $20K plan at $22 for Step 1, with $50 more due only at the Pro Trader stage. Its High Stakes page lists Step 1 of the $2.5K account at $19.

Bootcamp rules for the $20K plan:

  • Three steps at $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000, each with a 6% target.
  • A 5% maximum loss per step and no daily pause during the steps.
  • No time limit on any step.

Downsides: accounts with no activity for 30 consecutive days are closed. The Bootcamp split starts at 50/50 on a $20K account. Some of The5ers' official pages contradict each other, so read the page for your exact program. See the Bootcamp $20K rules.

Futures firms for beginners

My Funded Futures Studio: a static loss limit

My Funded Futures offers Studio plans with a static Max Loss Limit and no daily loss limit. Its Studio guide lists Studio #003 at $75 for a $5,000 account.

  • A $500 profit target.
  • A $250 static Max Loss Limit that never moves.
  • No minimum trading days.
  • A one-time fee, and the homepage states no activation fee on any plan.

Downsides: $250 of room is tight. One oversized trade can end the account, so trade micros. Studio accounts have a 7-day inactivity limit, and you can hold only one Studio account at a time. Evaluation fees are non-refundable. See the Studio #003 rules.

Tradeify Growth: one-time fee, no extras

Tradeify's pricing reference lists the Growth 25K at $99. All plans are one-time purchases, with no recurring billing and no activation fees. Our database lists a 1-day minimum and a $600 daily loss limit on the 25K.

Tradeify says it does not offer practice accounts. Its FAQ describes the Premier Trading League as a free, simulated head-to-head league.

Downsides: three account types with different rules can confuse a new trader. The Growth drawdown trails at end of day, which is harder to track than a static floor. Hedging across accounts is banned.

Topstep: the cheapest monthly start, plus education

Topstep's pricing help article lists the 50K Trading Combine at $49 a month on the Standard Path. Topstep also runs TopstepTV, which its homepage describes as a media network offering trading insights and education.

Downsides: the subscription rebills each month until you pass or cancel. The Standard Path adds a $149 activation fee per Express Funded Account earned. The No Activation Fee Path costs $95 a month at 50K. Your best day should stay below 55% of the profit target, or the target rises.

Take Profit Trader: watch the monthly cost

Take Profit Trader uses an end-of-day trailing drawdown on its Test, set at $1,500 on the 25K per its help center. Its homepage advertises code NOFEE50 for 50% off for life and no activation fee. Without it, PRO activation is a one-time $130.

Downsides: the Test is a monthly subscription. Our database lists $150 a month for the 25K, so check the current price on the firm's site. Our database also notes that PRO accounts switch to an intraday trailing drawdown, which is stricter.

Mistakes first-time traders should avoid

  1. Buying the biggest account. A larger account does not make passing easier. It only makes failing more expensive. Start small.
  2. Skipping the rules page. Read the daily loss, maximum loss and consistency rules before your first trade.
  3. Ignoring how drawdown is measured. Trailing and static floors behave very differently after a winning day.
  4. Risking too much per trade. Size every trade against the daily limit, not the account balance. Our position size calculator helps.
  5. Racing a deadline that does not exist. Most firms here have no time limit. Use that.
  6. Forgetting inactivity rules. The5ers closes accounts after 30 inactive days. MFF Studio has a 7-day limit.
  7. Letting a subscription run. On monthly plans, cancel or pause billing when you stop trading.
  8. Revenge trading after a loss. Stop for the day after a set loss. A daily limit is a ceiling, not a target.
