Forex vs Futures Prop Firms: Which Should You Choose?
Forex/CFD and futures prop firms differ in pricing, drawdown rules, platforms and payouts. Here's how to decide which kind of program fits your trading.

Prop firms fall into two broad groups: forex/CFD firms, which offer currency pairs, indices, metals and often crypto through platforms like MetaTrader, and futures firms, which offer exchange-traded contracts such as the E-mini S&P 500 and Nasdaq through futures platforms. The rules differ enough that it's worth choosing deliberately.
Pricing
- Forex firms usually charge a one-time fee per challenge, often refundable with your first payout.
- Futures firms often charge a monthly subscription until you pass, and some add an activation fee for the funded account. Others have moved to one-time pricing.
Drawdown
- Forex firms commonly use a static maximum loss plus a daily loss limit.
- Futures firms commonly use a trailing drawdown (end-of-day or intraday) and may have no daily limit. See trailing vs static drawdown.
Profit targets and timing
Forex two-step challenges often ask for around 8–10% in phase 1 and 4–5% in phase 2. Futures evaluations usually set a single dollar target, roughly 6% of the account size. Many firms on both sides no longer set a time limit, but some have minimum trading days.
Instruments and leverage
Forex firms give access to many markets in one account with leverage set by the firm. Futures accounts have a maximum number of contracts instead of leverage, and trading hours follow the exchange.
Payouts
Both groups commonly offer trader splits of 80–90%. Futures firms are more likely to have consistency rules or payout buffers before your first withdrawal; forex firms are more likely to have fixed payout cycles.
Which suits you?
- Choose forex/CFD if you trade currency pairs, metals or multiple markets, hold trades for hours or days, and prefer a static drawdown.
- Choose futures if you day-trade index or commodity futures, want a regulated exchange market, and are comfortable managing a trailing drawdown.
